On Feeling Foreign

When I decided to go to China, one of my colleagues who had been there several times told me that he didn't really have much desire to go to Europe anymore. It just didn't feel foreign enough to him after China. When he told me that, I thought he was kidding, but now I'm not so sure. Don't get me wrong: I've loved traveling in Scotland and England with Andy and Maria, but there is a way in which it seems so much less foreign since my travels. in Asia. After seeing open air dentistry and chickens slaughtered on the street, well, western Europe is tame. Plus, nobody wants to have their picture taken with me here--even Andy and Maria seem disinclined to ask me to pose for pics. Where is my adoring public, I ask you? Back in China, I guess. I was interested in how many Chinese tourists we saw in Edinburgh. They were everywhere. I told Andy and Maria that I was thinking about going up to some of them to ask if I could have my picture taken with them. I have a feeling that they would have loved that, but I never did conjure up the nerve to do it. Anyway, I'm enjoying London a great deal, but I'm eager to get to Paris. I want the challenge of a foreign language and that feeling that I'm in a place wholly unlike home. That's what I guess I love most about foreign travel.
