Market Day

Findlay Market is one of my favorite Cincinnati places. This historic public market on a nice summer Saturday morning is a hopping place to be. Neighborhood folks from Over-the-Rhine and shoppers from all over the city converge to buy fresh food, listen to street musicians, sip coffee and read the newspaper, or just do some people watching.

The outdoor farmers market and the indoor market filled with butchers and bakery stalls were packed with people today. I met my friend Paul at about 10, and after coffee and some kind of blueberry scone sort of thing, we shopped. I bought yellow and white flesh peaches, two kinds of noodles at the Asian market, rice and bean curd noodles, to be exact. I bought fresh lamb and cherry sausage, and a big bunch of colorful zinnias, too.

Here they are once I got them in a vase. Talk about cheerful flowers!

Findlay Market is on my list of best things about Cincinnati. Its funny. As I write this, I find myself thinking about China, and the market we visited in the village of Fuli in Guangxi province.

There is something vibrant and so interesting about an outdoor market.
Whether it's in the American Midwest or southern China, it's a great way to spend a morning.
